What Does Valentine’s Day Mean To You?

ValentineIs Valentine’s Day a day for sharing romantic dinners and chocolates with the one you love? Or is it a quiet evening on the sofa, holding hands with your spouse?

Valentine’s Day has so many different meanings for people as does the inspiration behind it. And though it’s typically for romance, it’s not just for people with significant others. As such, there is no “right” way to spend the day.

When you hear “Valentine’s Day”, it’s easy to conjure pictures of roses, couples holding hands, and long dances in the moonlight. But if you don’t have a romantic partner, does that mean you shouldn’t celebrate the holiday? No, because you don’t need to be in love to celebrate love.

Enjoy an ice cream cone with your grandmother, record your niece’s ballet recital as you cheer her on from the audience, help your best friend with a task he/she has been putting off, or share a few laughs with your sibling.

Valentine’s Day shouldn’t exclude anyone who hasn’t yet fallen in love. Instead, it should be used to celebrate love that is important to every one of us.

How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Today is the book birthday for a new contemporary romance!

TealPaisleyTights 500x750

Life post-graduation was supposed to see the launch of paisley-loving Jadyn’s art career, or at least an art gallery showing one of her watercolor paintings. Instead, this Pittsburgh native is locked into a low-paying, buttoned-up consultant position with an impossible boss. When another colleague is dismissed, Jadyn inherits extra workload, including the company’s biggest client. If she loses him, she’s fired.

Jadyn people-pleases her way through life, resulting in extra work opportunities and a community classroom of art students. But when two guys appear on her doorstep, she just might not be able to people-please her way out of this love triangle. At the end of the day, she can’t please everyone.

Then, because of a small spending problem, Jadyn is evicted from her apartment, and she must move in with her know-it-all sister. Jadyn needs to decide between a job transfer that would place her near her love interest, or a full-time art career with all its risks.

Stretched like canvas between responsibility and dreams, she must choose. Will practicality always win?

Influenced by Music–by Diane Wylie

I am listening to The Beatles LOVE CD and I do love it! When I was a pre-teen the Beatles were the boy band that stole my heart and I have a special place in my heart for all of their wonderful music. There are so many of their songs that are associated with some memorable time in my life, but the one song I’d like to talk about is “Paperback Writer” (which is actually not found on the LOVE CD).

The pure longing and desire to become a novelist comes across loud and clear in that song. It just amazes me that those twenty-something year old musicians were able to capture what so many of us are now experiencing in our quest to become published or republished.

The lyrics say it all…

“Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It’s based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.”

Then the lyrics turn to pleading, almost desperation. Who among us hasn’t felt this at one time or another? Like we would do anything they want, if they would just accept our work?

“It’s a thousand pages, give or take a few,
I’ll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.

If you really like it you can have the rights,
It could make a million for you overnight.
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.”

SecretsandSacrifices 500x750

So, was I influenced by the song at the tender age of 12? At the time I liked the song, but didn’t think much about it. But now it pops into my head with frequency, particularly when I’m drafting a query letter to an agent or editor. The yearning expressed in the song to become a Paperback Writer is not just a bunch of empty words; it is a true heartfelt wish that we authors put in the hands of others with a wing and a prayer. We hope with all our hearts they don’t stomp on our heart’s desire.

That brings me to the topic of my publisher, Vinspire Publishing. I first heard about them when they were called Vintage Romance and focused solely on historical romances. I was writing Civil War period romances at the time and decided to send in my query. This was back in 2005.

The editor-in-chief liked my first book, SECRETS AND SACRIFICES (still available too), and I have been with them ever since. I now have four novels published through Vinspire, and a new one, MAGIC OF THE PENTACLE, is set to come out May 31st. With another paranormal romance under contract with them. I couldn’t be happier with Vinspire and what they’ve done for me!
